The Song Poem of the Northwind and the Sun

Sopaingate xhmuju xhnafhúnàyejikh exhingesa

Tlhèfho fhaxhnaotàswaor khyi pejor ùwasu.

Once, the Northwind and the Sun were disputing,

Wondering whoever was the most powerful among the twain,

for the snowwhite Moon chanted

That she would become the bride

Only unto the strongest Prince.

Jhwetlhìmejikh qir khmiweqatsìlpora xhìmlut

Kekutlhi kus xhinthúnga khrotlhuyèxhyeu kúxhlixang.

Suddenly the three saw a wayfarer,

Swathed in a warm, large travelling dreamcloak,

Which he wore, as he was coming upon the road.

– Khmaqàrlrur khmetonùpwar pexheyaning

Keixhloas khrujáxi jhaeyupwàrengutt tepuyaneng.

And the graceful Moon chanted,

“I imagine a way

By which we three will decide this contest.

Khwunaqhiyáxeus sir ínge lwukàyatser xhneyemaike Khwiêning! –

‘Tis the one, who is among you, who can do this,

When you cause the traveller to remove

His dreamcloak, who is fated to be considered to be the stronger,

Being the more lordly than the other, and unto the dear one

Himself, as my husband, I shall give myself in marriage.

May the beloved Wind begin first with the tournament!”

Xhnoike qhòqwiwi qhòqwiwi khornateiqha xhlir fhoâs

Sekhnèyuqei xhloarutakhaôngixing Qterfhórèsoyan.

So the Sun retired behind a cloud,

And the Northwind kept blowing with all of his

Huff-puffing might towards the viator.

Wtsaojheyùpwarn tèfha qlaêkhatser Qterfhórèsoxing.

But the swifter her blew

With sharper gusts of wind from him,

The closer did the traveler fold

His dreamcloak around him, until,

At last, abandoning all hope of victory,

The Northwind tried in vain and then gave up in wanhope.

##

Qìr té xèqhes kórm Xátùpwar pejor kúyeitt

Tneîfha’ árepakhajhwenùxhwi koxhaxhrejoring

Khùrit ser teiqhàxhmúrl khnalqeyùtya khlitruyaloîxing.

Then the Sun came out, shining,

Being divine with all of his warmth,

And all of his glorious smile, upon the viator.

Xhmathóxhnin khli koxhayuqeixeng kongai Xhàrpol.

As soon as the elegant traveler felt

His genial rays of light, he began to remove

His warm dreamcloak, and

The Northwind was obliged to confess

Because the honored Sun was the stronger of the two men.

– Pòfhya teiqhakhnujoxíju Pwàlu khìthyu ser khnónexhni. –

And the lady Moon gave here hosts of Rainbow Serpents

To the Sun, saying,

“No one can withstand the Sun’s laughter.”
