Notebook Entry: Monosyllababels in Babel

Still not not understand the family dynamics that we have sometimes. Puey’s been trying to leave the war rede. He’s sitting at the other side of the table. He looks like he’s about to fall asleep at any moment now. Great-Uncle Táto let me bring one of my notebooks and sit and listen to the rede. The war chiefs are upset because of the last few battles. Great-Uncle keeps packing away my scrolls, so I won’t be able to work with prefixes as of yet, but I think that at least I can work with one little bit of phonology which has been bothering me.
Puey’s nodding. He’s sitting up again. Nobody else is noticing that the Crown Prince is having trouble staying awake. I hope that he won’t try and cut his hand or slit his arm to force himself to stay awake, such as he was taught in his ladhood. I wish that the children of Jaràqtu were a little prone to hurting themselves.

The phonology of Babel permits us to have certain monosyllables. It has occurred to me that many possible monosyllables actually do exist. Let’s figure this out. It will help keep me awake. Perhaps Táto will let me slide the notebook down unto Puey. Babel monosyllables may

Wait, wait, let’s make a box.

Monosyllababels

That’s better. Babel monosyllables must follow this pattern:

Ø, P, T, K, Fh, Th, S, Jh, Qh, J, Kh, Q, Khw, Khr, Khl, Khy, Khm, Khn, Xhw, Xhr, Xhl, Xhy, Xhm, Xhn, Ts, Tlh, Xh, X, Wts, Xhth, Qth, Wth, Jhp, Jhkh, Tn, Pw, Py, Pr, Pl, Tw, Ty, Tr, Qw, Qy, Qr, Ql, Fhw, Fhy, Fhr, Fhl, Thw, Thy, Sw, Sy, St, Sq, Jhw, Jhy, Lr, Lw, Ly, Pfh, Fht, Pt, Tq, Qt +

Í, É, Á, Ó, Ú, Aê, Aô, Aû, Eî, Eû, Iê, Iî, Oâ, Oê, Uî

+ Ø, L, R, M, N, Ng, T, S, Kh, Rl, Rm, Rn, Rng, Rt, Rs, Rkh.

In theory this yields 15,840 possible monosyllabic words, which may be participles, personal pronouns, relative pronouns, or affixes. We have already met a great deal of the affixes and personal pronouns and relative pronouns, and those three types words are not words which can admit more unto their families, but particples may admit more unto their tribe, although it is not done too often. I have mentioned the process of creating compounds above and many of these compounds are quite common in our daily language, but compounding just is not commonly done. Anyway, in actuality the number of monosyllabic participles which actually exist is far smaller. I shall endeaver to list all of the monosyllabic participles that I can remember, as well as monosyllabic fhtóte affixes, and tòngqe personal pronouns and relative pronouns, which of course do not demand an acute or circumflex for their vowel.

Have I mentioned how loverly the orthography is? No, language is not just used by a single people or with a single topic, it is everything.

Lots of rules too. I don’t think the rules are too difficult, once one understands the cases. Exceptions. And contradictions. I keep telling Puey, this is the rule, but there are just a few exceptions and it’s all just common sense, and I know I’m confusing him. But children can and do speak it, one does not have to have a mind of gears and clockwork to computate it all, just a few exceptions, regular I think.

Wondering whether language can change one’s preconceptions of what language is. Can language do what language has never done before?

Good music, good dance, good feel of the language, a taste, a song.

One should be able to take Babel and from it generate all of the story of Puey and the Princess. One can look at the vocabulary, the structure, the affixes, and leave with a complete encylopædia of our families, believes, cities, mores, castes, friends, and love, the language and culture cannot be disentwined. The language does not constrain us. We are not tied up, not prisoned anyone in the Forbidden Gardens of our language. Ninjitsu Tánin and former Pariah Heretics and Pirates and Nobles are all the same in language, they are all respected of the same words. Poetic and flowing, an endless phonæsthetic lullaby of words. Singing singing singing.

Language cannot quite encourage or force a worldview, but it is part of our culture. We all spoke the same language and yet we were still trapped in the War of Heaven. Having the same words do not keep my Sisters from bickering, or any of the sides of my very complicated family. And yet still one must wonder. Think. Dream. Is it truly possible to think of something against the alchemy of language? At least it must encourage the cultural normals that we have. Or I guess I can say that language does not encourage any mode of thinking, given the differences one fnds within the billion, billion viceroy kingdoms of the Winter Imperium, but in the lips of a facile speak it can create what was unspeakable before, it does change. Shifting. Genius. I am not sure.

I like the clicks.

Primers, grammatical analyses, lexicons, cryptolinguistic

Can langauge e'er be finished? Crystallized. Sure it will grow, it will branch and flow. But not quite changing as it did when I was tiny. Back then it was exploding and imploding. Shifting. Falling.

I find clarity to be important, at least when one wishes to be clear. Precise. And yet communication demands a bit of fuzziness.

Words and Affixes consisting of a Consonant with a Diphthong:
CVV:

The language is an specific as we must be, the personal pronouns can be quite simple, but they can also be inflected for gender.

The Traîkhiim are always asking for more changes, for more silliness. They say it’s fine for language to be spoken and written, but they want to add dance and noises. Squeaks and giggles. Puey and his Sisters already communicate in gestures. Perhaps we could use smell as phonomes?

Have barely even mentioned khlùrnuqha idioms. But in Babel, khlùrnuqha are elements of language and mythology. Idioms are all about our history, our culture. The Imperial House Pwéru. The Immortals. The Real Folk.

I just know that someone is going to say that Babel is the very worst language which one could e'er have imagined.

I suppose in the end it is impossible to come up with some criteria of Babel since we are all within it and part of the Dreamtime, or at least the chrysalis coccoon of Gloßopoeia as it becomes what it was meant to be. Perhaps it may be possible for one to look at various arts such as painting and ballet and music and find some sort of criteria among them and apply them unto Babel.

Objections. I have always considered Babel to be an art, and from that art comes music and dance. Others may disagree. Almost certainly shall in generations to come. Perhaps one will say that creating language is a craft and not an art. I disagree. But I must have a reason for disagreeing. What separates me from say those of the Artisan Caste who craft with their hands, or the technician of the Qhíng Builder Caste? Yes, there can be elegance in it, but not the same type. Must think about this.

Language, as a framework of reality. Perhaps should think of language in a more linguistic and dispassionate sense rather than as fantasy. It is all my fantasy. I think the grammarians are more interested in trying to figure out how to say something in the socially correct way, they would be uncomfortable with the way that I add quests and castles and monsters and heroes and beautiful princesses into the language. Artificial distinction, I think. Khlìjha is very meta.

I wonder whether any of the Saints of old used to create their own words? We are told at very young children that Khniikhèrkhmair the Prophet created the Book when he wrote the first Book. The patriarch of literature, he. And yet still I have to expain unto others what it is that I’m doing. And even then either I have the situation where someone will look at my writing and not understand it, or they’ll be amused by it and offer no comment, or they will ignore it, but so I have no way to improve the language. At least Great-Uncle can help me work out the technique of Language, and from that I can create the art for myself.

It can be quite vexing to find out that sometimes the Wise were wrong on so many topics, they were the ones who completely were mistaken on fundamental issues of vocabulary and morphology. Literature and music and art are all about some sort of conversation, a dialogue of figuring out how they work and why they are beautiful. And yet we do not even have words to describe how to describe language itself. Or perhaps not. Complete. Large. Complex. Creativity. Musical pitch tone. Flowing.

But then again perhaps it is not at all important to be able to describe language in such a way. One does not have to say what does not need to be chanted. Is it not enough to feel the beauty and love of it? It is enough that just a few will be able to feel the symphony of my words. Enough. And than one day Puey will be able to speak it. I can hope.

Painting and jewelry, pottery and scultures, mosaics, and flowers and architecture, all a part of the music that makes up language. Dreaming about language in terms of beauty and paradise.

Paradise is a fun word, don’t you think?

It just has a good sound unto it.

Oh look, we’re coming up to the word for iced cream.

Puey, are you awake? I’m going to slide the notebook down in your general direction.

Puey?

Puey?

Puey?

Are you awake?

Puey, write in the notebook. Write here. Anywhere. It doesn’t matter where, we can all figure out what I’m trying to write.

Qwasáta, I’m awake.

You look tired.

I have not slept in a few days.

But there have been some pauses in the battle.

I can’t leave the troops behind.

You have to sleep sometimes.

No I don’t.

Puey, I’ll ask Grandfather Pátifhar that you be permitted to sleep.

The peoples wish to see their Crown Prince. One does not feel the need for sleep. One can
Endure for quite some time without the need for sleep.

Puey, I want you to sleep after this meeting.

The past is all about mourning, my Princess. The war chiefs are getting nervous. They think that the battle will have to last for quite some time.

Puey, no one’s looking at you. Just close your eyen.

I wish Grandfather Pátifhar wouldn’t keep prodding you back awake.

One forgets sometimes that he is watching us. He is quite an excellent teacher.

Puey, he can be quite an harsh teacher sometimes. I don’t think that smacking you with the staff was quite necessary.

It is not too quaad, my Princess. At least he ensures that I am staying awake.

Pew, I’m just happy that he’s letting us pass the notebook back and forth to each other.

I just wish I had something better to write to you, Qwasáta.

I like it when you call me Qwasáta. One day I’ll get you to say it with your lips.

One can try.

Together. You and I.

Grandfather is looking o'er my shoulder.

Yes, Great-Uncle is looking o'er my shoulder. I suppose I should write only that which is appropriate.

Is your chair comfortable, Princess?

Yes, quite. I’m using Great-Uncle’s wings to comfort me. Oh he’s groaning now.

Great Uncle is annoyed that I’m writing such trivial things and passing them to you.

Qwasáta, I like the word lists you are creating. Even though I do not speak language I am beginning to understand it.

Good. Kisses.

I was a little afraid of language before because it seemed so arbitrary unto me, and complicated too. But at least I can see that it’s the same sounds repeated again and again like the same notes upon the harp.

Yes, yes. Kisses.

And although there are a great many prefixes, at least they are not just of random put together. And when I think about the prefixes again and again I can start putting the sounds to the forms.

Just wait until we get to suffixes. There are quite a many of them. Many many many many. Well, just a few hundred.

A FEW HUNDRED!

Ah …

Éfha!

What?

How many affixes did you create?

Puey!

Is there any way I can just use the prefixes?

No.

I’ll try.

No.

Princess!

You need the suffixes also. You won’t be able to express the construct case, ingeminate case, absolutive case, ergative case without suffixes.

What about the vocative?

Sure, you one expresses the vocative with a prefix.

Then that is all that I need. I’ll just call things by their names.

Puey!

Isn’t that a vocative?

PUEY!

That’s another vocative.

You’re learning the suffixes.

I don’t have enough brain power for suffixes!

Yes you do! I’ve seen your fighting with two swords at the same time, as you hurl monsters and beasts down and lead the troops. You can do anything.

Except talk.

Yes you can!

I don’t know.

I shall be with you all the while. I shall put my fingers upon your lips and kiss the words unto you.

Princess, that is not what I wish for you to write in your notebook.

I’m only writing about linguistic phenomena!

My precious charge, I do not think that osculation has anything to do with kissing.

With all due respect, I disagree. I’m passing the notebook to Puey.

What am I supposed to write, Qwasáta?

Anything you want. Anything to keep you awake during the war rede. Anything to keep Grandfather Pátifhar from smacking you again.

He hit me again.

Just blink a lot and write unto me.

I can’t write as quickly as you can?

Oh?

Your fingers are as lissome as you are, they dance upon the surface of the page and create beautiful forms.

How poetic.

I don’t write as quickly.

You have good handwriting.

His handwriting is adequate, my granddaughter. We shall have to work on his hand at a later date.

Grandfather! Give the notebook to Puey!

Do I have to pay attention to the war rede also?

Yes, someone has to, and you’re the oldest. Let Puey have the notebook.

Here you go.

What am I supposed to be writing, Qwasáta?

I don’t remember anymore. I’m feeling a little sleepy too, now that I think about it.

Princess.

Another vocative.

Did you really create all these words?

Oh yes.

There must be hundreds of them. Thousands of them. If you’ve created an hundred suffixes, you’ve surely made thousands of thousands of words.

Oh yes.

How many words have you created?

I don’t know. Maybe about twice eleven thousand or so.

!!

It’s not too many.

!!

Puey!

!!

Now you’re just being silly.

Does one truly have to learn those hundred suffixes?

Hundreds of suffixes. And the answer is yes.

And does one have to learn all the words?

You already know the words, my love! You hear the words everyday.

Not the same.

Oh?

It’s just not the same. Hearing a word and figuring out the grammar is completely different.

How so?

Hard to explain.

We have time.

Yes.

Lots of time.

Yes.

And there’s nothing better to do. We’re just passing the notebook from side to side.

Anything to keep Grandfather Pátifhar from smacking me again.

I’m reading what you’re writing! And I didn’t hit you very hard.

Grandpa! You did too hit Puey hard.

Oh Princess! I barely just tapped him. It was a love tap.

I don’t hit Puey! And I love him.

I had to strike him. One cannot have the Cælestial Crown Prince falling asleep during the war rede.

I don’t like it. As soon as I become the Moon Empress I’m making sure that nobody hits Puey e'er again.

Do I get to write in the notebook?

Sure, Great-Uncle.

What are we writing? Oh we’re passing notes! This is so silly!

When do I get a chance to write in the notebook, Qwasáta?

I think we’re all just grabbing the notebook and writing at random, my grandchild.

Oh, it’s my turn. Okay, the scholar here. I’m going to write about rainbrellas. How I love rainbrellas! They are so much fun.

Great-Uncle, don’t clutter my notebook with your love of umbrellas. I’m giving this notebook to Puey.

I don’t much understand love for umbrellas myself. Now staves, they are quite useful, both for shepherding dinosaurs and for smacking children.

Grandpa! That’s it, I don’t think that either you or Great-Uncle should write in my notebook.

Fine, I don’t want to write anymore. I’ll just lean upon my rainbrella and dream of better days.

Yes, I don’t wish to write in the notebook any longer either.

Fine. Let Puey have the notebook.

What am I supposed to write, my Princess?

Anything you like.

How much longer is this list?

Just a little longer.

You’re not going to try to test me on all these words, are you?

No, no. But they are words of just everday use. Perhaps páng is not a quotidian word, but many of these others are. Mostly.

I thought you wrote that not all of the monosyllables were used.

There are 15,840 possible monosyllables that are possible from the phonotactics of Babel. But only a very few are actually used.

Define ‘few.’

I don’t know. A couple of thousand I think. But that’s just a few when one thinks about the entire sum vocabulary that our language must have.

You are sure I just can’t use the vocative case?

Yes, I’m quite certain.

Perhaps I can just point and smile.

No, I don’t quite think that will work.

It’s worked so far. I have absolutely no difficulty in making myself understandable unto my Clan and you.

I know, I know. But still, I just wish for you to know as much about language as possible.

I think I understand.

Do you?

It’s difficult to explain.

I know.

I’m not as creative as you.

You’re a harpist.

Not the same. But I can feel something from your language. I know that you have put a great deal of work into it, even though I may never quite understand it all.

Good, good.

The language has its own song unto itself. I feel warmth and joy.

I love you.

Qwasáta, language would have been very different if I had created it.

How so?

It would not just be in the form. Yes, the sounds would be different, and the grammar would be very simple, but that’s not the true difference.

Tell me more. And perhaps there is a limit as to how simple language can be.

If I had created language it would just be very different in flavor. Language for me would be very melancholy, it would have lots of words for duty and sadness, and fewer words for flowers and ballet.

But when I create language I think about you. I have added many words for weaponry and sadness and melancholy blue. But you are correct, the words do tend to focus more upon my perceptions.

Look, there’s Qluîm, my pet bird. Hello, Qluîm!

Hello, Qluîm.

Yes, back to words. I have noticed that even though we Xhámi are the fewest in number in the Dreamtime, the vocabulary does focus more upon us Færie. There are lots of words for hands and faces such as we Færie have, and not as many words for tentacles.

We do have words for tentacles, &c, but, yes, the language does grow from the mind of a princess, one particular princess.

One rather perculiar princess, I may add.

Stop writing in my book, Great-Uncle.

Qwasáta, what does &c mean?

Xhmérs? It means the rest. Kai ta loipa, kaj tiel plu, e rets, minidibi,
Et cetera

Oh.

How else would language have been different if you had created it?

I don’t know. Maybe lots of words for carrying heavy objects.

Puey, I think the humiliative construction has quite a flavor of you. We have all of these prefixes which essentially mean bowing. The prefixes just remind me of you somehow.

I’m not sure what other changes I would make. But nothing as absurd and fun as the Traîkhiim.

No dancing out language?

Perhaps one can find a way to fight out Babel and poke folk in the faces as some grammatical thing.

Ixhúja had similar ideas. She wanted a gender system involving punching someone in the face.

Um.

Puey, we need to find her an husband.

NO!

I just think we should be open to the idea.

NO!!!

That’s a lot of exclamation marks.

NO!!!!!!!

We can discuss this later. How else would you have changed language.

Maybe something more with music.

How so?

I like the sound of the harp. I wish there were a way to make language more like the song of the harp.

Interesting.

I do like the musical pitch tone system thing. It is music. But only of a sort.

Oh?

We have Á and A and À, so we really have just three musical pitches.

Yes. But it’s not always the same. One does not pronounce a specific tone as the same musical note each time, it’s all part of the musical pitch of the clause or sentence.

But still, just three notes.

One has to keep it simple.

You are talking about simple!

Yes!

You who created a thousand prefixes and a thousand suffixes and a million words!

But language is different.

He has a point there, Princess.

Great-Uncle, stop taking the notebook.

Yes, but Puey is right, my granddaughter. Now all of a sudden you bring simplicity as virtue.

Do I get to write in my defense?

Not if one can help it. I shall give the notebook to Puey.

Thank you, Grandfather. What was the question?

Ask her about simplicity.

Oh yes, I almost forgot. I think that a language with seven musical tones would be quite easy, and then we can get ride of all of these prefixes and suffixes.

Puey, we are not getting rid of anything.

I think you offended her, Master Puîyus.

Great-Uncle, stay out of this. And no, I’m not offended.

I don’t wish to change the Princess’ artwork in any way. I was just wondering.

Why not let Master Puey make some changes?

Grandfather! Okay, no adults are permitted to write in my book.

Quite a pity, indeed. And I just wish to keep mentioning rainbrellas.

Both of you are quite silly. Shouldn’t one of us be paying attention to the War Rede?

Your Father, divine Kàrijoi is paying attention. And Sieur Íngìkhmar also.

That’s splendid. And both of the greatest advisors to them are not paying attention.

Princess, I like language just as it is. I was just thinking that if I had created language it would have been all vowels and all song, but perhaps less useful.

What do you mean?

I don’t really understand grammar too well, but I’m sure your affixes are all about putting the words together to make sense. The affixes tell us what goes where and why.

Yes.

They are like Elders and Parents. They tell us who is the subject and agent and warrior.

Perhaps the affixes are like princes and dragons. You’re a prince, my love.

I don’t feel like a prince. Princes are already supposed to know how to talk.

Talking isn’t always the best tool that one has.

Beloved, I think we already communicate very well, even though I talk not.

I have an idea.

??

Hah hah.

!!

I’m just thinking.

Yes?

They’re not watching.

I know.

Nobody is watching us.

I know.

Father?

Emperor Kàrijoi is making a solemn speech.

Your Father?

He’s saying where we shall attack.

Grandfather?

For once he’s not standing behind me and ready to smack me awake.

Good. And Great-Uncle Táto is gone. He’s with the scribes now.

Does he have the rainbrella with him?

Yes, of course!

Nobody watching us.

I know.

Do you have any ideas?

Puey?

Yes?

Let’s escape.

Where?

Just out of these halls?

We can’t.

Why?

We just can’t.

Why?

I’m the Future Emperor, you’re the Empress of Tomorrow.

But we don’t need to be here. You plan out battles in your mind. This is all just show for you.

I know.

You plan out battles as I plan out language! I’m going to add a few more explanation marks here. !!!

I know, Princess, but we just can’t leave.

Nobody is looking at us!

Qwasáta!

Here’s what we’re going to do. We’ll leave the notebook here so everything thinks I’ll be coming back.

You have a plan. Your eyen have that little flash.

Good. You know me well. I’ll slip out of m chair and look like I’m going to tie my ballet slippers.

And I?

Make it look like you’re getting up to stretch your muscles.

And?

We’ll both slip out of the halls and meet outside.

And?

Let’s run back upon the deck. We’ll find a quiet place and practice grammar.

I’m not sure.

Fine, we’ll just kiss.

Qwasáta!

Kissing is a form of grammar! We’ll slip out of here, you’ll wrap your arms about me, I’ll wrap my wings about you, and we’ll kiss for a time.

Princess.

I mean grammar. Grammar. We’ll practice words.

It is dull in here. We can practice pronouncing words.

Yes, kissing. I’ll meet you outside.

Where’s Princess Éfhelìnye? She was just with me a moment ago? Grandfather Pátifhar, she left her notebook here.

She’ll be returning soon. She would not just leave her book here otherwise. I don’t suppose you’ve seen the Cælestial Crown Prince?

I thought I saw his stretching his arms.

I’m sure he’s returning soon.

How long has the Princess been gone, Grandfather Pátifhar?

I don’t know, probably for as long as Éfhelìnye has been gone. Hmm. We should find them, Jhakúpa.

Yes, do let’s. We’ll leave the book here. I like these lists though. Very thorough.

[In a different hand]

What a pretty notebook you have, my Princess. These are the words of Abbá Íngìkhmar. I don’t suppose you’ve seen my Son, have you? I’ll just leave the book here.

[Another handwriting]

Are you still creating words, my child? Nobody can find you or Puîyus anywhere at all. I may have to summon your Mother. I’ll just leave your book here just in case you’re about to return.

[Even another handwriting, this time in sparklent light shimmerent]

I can sense your thoughts, your feelings in your words, my Daughter. Puîyos will be with you. Fret not, your Mother shall rescue you.

[And even some more handwriting, sprawling and bizarre in form]

WHO LEFT THIS NOTEBOOK LYING ABOUT? NOTE BOOK THE NOTE VERY TASTY AT ALL.

ANYBODY FOR MENTIONING PIE? EPISTLE IN YOUR LISTS QTHAÊ. BUT NOT PIE. PIE! PIE! WHY NOT PIE LISTED ANYWHERE ON YOUR LISTS?
